Summary: Wanna convert MPG files into ProRes for editing in NLEs like FCP? This article will teach you how to change MPG to ProRes freely.

"Hi, here, I start my MPG to FCP workflow now. But the problem is that FCP rejects MPG files directly. I searched on Google and found that I should encode videos into ProRes first so that FCP can afford MPG files. Is that right?"

MPG files had been developed as easy methods to compress VHS-quality video and CD-quality audio into a usable audiovisual file format with out losing as well a lot high quality. However, when editing these videos with iMovie, Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere in Mac, you'll often run into troubles like import error, poor color or quality. Actually, such highly compressed formats are not the ideal formats for editing purpose. Instead, raw clips like ProRes performs much better.

To change MPG to ProRes, I used Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac, which is an excellent tool to convert MPEG-1, MPEG-2, or MPEG-4 video files to Apple ProRes MOV so that you can import into Final Cut Pro for further editing. Before converting MPEG to ProRes 422, this software allows you to do some simple editing, such as, crop MPEG video, trim MPEG file, merge MPEG clips, add watermark, add special effects, etc. Now, download the software on Mac and follow the guide below to start conversion.

How to Transcode MPG to ProRes simply

Step 1: Load MPG footage

Launch the program and click "Add " button to import the MPG files to the top MPG to ProRes Converter Mac. Batch conversion is supported.

Step 2: Select output format

Click on the "Format" bar and get the dropdown menu, then move your pointer to choose "Final Cut Pro> Apple PreRes 422" or "Apple ProRes 422 HQ" or "Apple ProRes 4444" as the output format. Sweet Reminder: FCP 7 older version only can work with Apple PreRes 422 MOV format.

Tip: If you want to set some parameters for the output profile, you could click the "Settings" button to set the output bitrate, encode, frame rate, resolution, sample rate, channels, etc.

Step 3: Start conversion

Tap Convert button to start transcoding MPG to ProRes .mov for Final Cut Pro on Mac OS X.

Once the conversion completes, you can click "Open" to find the .MOV videos which can be directly imported to FCP. As you see, now you can import and edit MPG clips in Final Cut Pro 6/7/X without problems.
