The Federal Reserve is a private bank, which has the ability to print money without any Congressional oversight. Since the US dollar hasn't been backed by gold since the 1970s, every dollar the Fed prints devalues and debases the currency. Recently, the Fed has printed trillions and trillions of dollars. Many economists predict that this will lead to Zimbabwe and Weimar Republic style hyperinflation.
